
LEDES (Legal Electronic Data Exchange Standard) billing is a specific format that has standardized legal billing from a law firm to a corporation. LEDES billing uses an open standard that allows your invoices to integrate directly into your clients financial systems. This billing was rapidly adopted by both legal entities and companies due to its uniformity and ease of use.
Types of LEDES Files
Here are the different types of LEDES billing that have been adopted:
- LEDES 1998
This was the initial LEDES billing format and is not currently in use. - LEDES 1998B
The most commonly used pipe-deliminated text file format appreciated for its simplicity and familiarity - LEDES 1998BI / 1998BI V2
This extends the LEDES 1998B format and is designed to accommodate international billing and handle taxes - LEDES 2000
This XML format has been adopted slowly but allows for new data elements and descriptors - XML E-Billing (XML E-Billing 2 and XML E-Billing 2.1)
This is the most current LEDES format that improve upon LEDES 2000.
